Moss Agate
Two things in the name are wrong, which is a promising start.
Is moss agate actually moss?
The green threads are not plant matter, and never were. They are dendritic inclusions of iron and manganese minerals — chlorite, mostly — that crystallised inside the growing quartz in branching, tree-like forms. The resemblance to moss or lichen suspended in ice is coincidence, and it is total.
Is moss agate actually agate?
Agate is defined by banding. Moss agate has none: it is a translucent chalcedony with inclusions distributed through it. Mineralogically it should be called moss chalcedony. Nobody does, and nobody is going to start.
Why is every moss agate different?
Banded stones repeat. Dendrites don't. The inclusion pattern in a moss agate is a record of how minerals happened to branch through a particular pocket of silica over a very long time, and no two pockets did the same thing. This is not marketing language — it is a structural fact about the stone, and it is the reason we cut moss agate flat and wide rather than domed. There is something to look into.
It also means choosing a moss agate is genuinely a matter of taste rather than grade. Some people want dense forest across the whole face; others want a clear stone with one branch through it. Neither is better material.
What should you look for in moss agate?
Clarity of the host: the background should be translucent, not muddy, so the dendrites read against light rather than sitting on grey. Then composition — the pattern should have somewhere to breathe. A stone packed edge to edge with dark green loses the effect entirely and just looks murky.
Is moss agate durable enough for daily wear?
Mohs 6.5 to 7, chalcedony hardness. Tough, stable, and well suited to a signet face or a wide flat setting worn daily. Fine-grained and even, so it takes a high polish and keeps it.
How do you care for moss agate?
Warm water, mild soap, soft brush. It is one of the more forgiving stones we set. Avoid prolonged heat and harsh solvents; there is no dye or resin to worry about in natural material.
